Avatar Tops Box Office For 5th Straight Week; Moves to #3 All-time

Avatar is a box office wonder. IT is almost unheard of most of the time to see a movie even make it to the top box office spot for more than a week or 2 nowadays. There are just too many new movies, and not enough movie goers to get a movie that many tickets sold for over a month. Avatar is one of those movies that it seems people are willing to go see more than once, however.

For the 5th straight week, Avatar sits a top the box office leader boards pulling in another $41.3 million, and is closing in on $500 million with domestic sales alone.

Denzel Washington’s “Book of Eli” settled for the #2 spot for the weekend, opening with $31.6 million. It is a post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.

At #3 was Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones”, earning $17.1 million after expanding nationwide in its sixth weekend showing.

Also, Avatar has just passed Star Wars as the 3rd most grossing film of all-time. They are not coming close to any quick weight loss diets in the sales department anytime soon it appears with a whopping $1.6 Billion worldwide sales total thus far. This is 2nd behind Cameron Crowe's tother top box office hit, Titanic at $1.8375 Billion. It is expected to pass #2 The Dark Knight within 2 weeks.

Avatar Wins the Big Awards At the Golden Globes

While it isn't exactly surprising that Avatar took some major awards at the Golden Globes last night, I always wonder how exactly these things get voted on. Clearly, Avatar is a pretty epic adventure, with a ton of amazing new CGI, but is it really that amazing of a movie? Enough to warrant the one award it won: Best Movie Drama?

It is obviously the biggest box office sensation since The Dark Knight, and may end up being the biggest of all time, but sales doesn't always make a movie great to me. Apparently it does for voters though.

Russel Crowe seemingly using working anti aging products has hit the big time again and has 2 of the top 5 grossing movies of all-time now. Titanic being the other. He also was awarded with the Best Director Golden Globe for his work on Avatar.

Nobody won more than 2 Golden Globes, but Avatar got the biggest ones of the bunch.

First-time winner "Dexter" nabbed television awards for two of its stars: Michael C. Hall (Best Actor, Drama) and John Lithgow (Best Supporting Actor, Drama). "Grey Gardens" also received a pair of awards for Best Miniseries and Best Actress winner Drew Barrymore. Dexter is by far my favorite TV show. Lost is probably second right now.

Joining Hall and Barrymore in the pool of first-time Golden Globe winners was Mo'Nique ("Precious"), who opened the awards with an emotional acceptance speech upon winning Best Supporting Actress. Both Mo'Nique and her "Precious" co-star Gabourey Sidibe received praise from various winners as the show progressed.

Here are more winners.

Ricky Gervais Isn't Loved By Everyone At Golden Globes

If you like comedy, and you like The Office (BBC version), you know who Ricky Gervais is. If you are an atheist who loves to watch them make fun of religion on Youtube, you probably know Gervais from that too. It is difficult to like to laugh and not find Gervais at least somewhat comical in my opinion.

While Gervais will probably tell you that he could use some slimming pills on his physique, he isn't really against saying what is on his mind either if you want to attack him and his views. HE isn't going to hold any punches against celebrities either in making fun of them, or Americans, or Christians, either. HE delivered on his promise to "give the A-listers a hard time". at the Golden Globes he hosted Sunday.

His targets included Sir Paul McCartney, Angelina Jolie, Steve Carrell, TV network NBC and the Hollywood set in general.

"Looking at all the faces here makes me remember all the great work that's been done this year by cosmetic surgeons," he joked.

BBC News Wrote that critics, including the New York Daily News , agreed Gervais' best quip was to appear on stage with a beer in his hand, saying: "I like a drink as much as the next man... unless the next man is Mel Gibson" - a reference to the Oscar-winner's arrest for drink driving in 2006.

The actor appeared to take the jab in his stride however, pretending to slur his words before announcing James Cameron as best director.

The Associated Press called Gervais "cheeky, silly and funny as heck" for his gentle jabs at the Hollywood glitterati.

"It's an honour to be here in a room full of what I consider to be the most important people on the planet - actors," Gervais opened with. "They're just better than ordinary people, aren't they?"

Gossip website TMZ and Radar Online also praised the host, calling him "hysterical" and "on fire" with his material.

"Actors aren't just loved here in Hollywood, they're loved the world over, because they're recognisable," Gervais said.

"You can be in the Third World, and you get a glimpse of a Hollywood star, and it makes you feel better. You can be a little child, a little Asian child, with no possessions, no money - but you see a picture of Angelina Jolie and you think, 'Mummy!'".

But industry bible The Hollywood Reporter called Gervais' opening minutes "disappointingly toothless", saying he "tackled predictable subjects" and made "few inspired" jokes.

"No doubt award shows will spring him from the bullpen for mid-telecast jumpstarts for some time to come, but his first headline outing was evidence he can't carry an entire event," wrote Andrew Wallenstein.

NBC Exec Says Conan is Gutless and Failed

Well now. AT least someone decided to speak their mind about the whole thing. HArd for anyone to get n the side of any NBC executive in this whole fiasco though considering that NBC is the 4th most viewed network (out of 4: ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC) at the moment, and failing hard in every way.

NBC Sports executive Dick Ebersol has defended Jay Leno against comedic barbs from Conan O’Brien and David Letterman in the wake of NBC’s request to move “The Tonight Show” to 12:05 a.m.

According to The New York Times, Ebersol called O’Brien and Letterman “chicken-hearted and gutless to blame a guy you couldn’t beat in the ratings.”

“They’re just striking out at Jay,” he added. “It seems like professional jealousy.”

Sounds like Ebersol is a moron to me.

Ebersol blamed the late night shift on O’Brien.

“What this is really all about is an astounding failure by Conan,” Ebersol added, referring to “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien’s” ratings, which have fallen since O’Brien took over the reigns.

“I like Conan enormously personally,” Ebersol told the newspaper. “He was just stubborn about not being willing to broaden the appeal of his show.”

Yeah...so this guy that does SPORTS knows all about Late Night now does he? SPORTS are easy to make appealing. The games themselves are the show, not some idiot commentators. Maybe he thinks Conan needs some human growth hormone to compete?

Where's Tiger Woods?

You have to be pretty damned talented to elude the paparazzi I must say. Tiger Woods seems to have them scratching their heads more than ever lately. You have to give him credit, as the celeb media losers have no idea for sure where he is exactly.

Instead we get wild claims about him being in Africa, in a brothel in Amsterdam, at a fat burner camp, and now it appears rumors are abound that Tiger is actually in a Sex Rahab clinic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

While officials at the Pine Grove Behavorial Health and Addiction Services clinic won't say whether Woods is a patient, two local TV stations, WJTV and WLBT, report that their sources confirm Woods was there.

In the university town of 45,000, "there are very few secrets," says WJTV reporter Chris Williams. But there aren't any certain answers, either. "I can't either confirm or deny I have seen him here," said Chip Gibson, director at Southeast Aviation at the Hattiesburg airport. "But, I can tell you that my telephone is ringing off the hook with news people wanting to know if I know anything."

Well Chip, I hope you rape these vultures for all their pocket cash you can get, because you pretty much sold your soul.

Jimmy Kimmel Guest On Jay Leno's Show

NEver thought Leno would have this guy on his show. especially after Kimmel decided that it would be great to make fun of Leno for about 10 minutes this week on his show over the beef he has with Conan O'Brien. I'm sure Conan doesn't have much need for appetite suppressant reviews with the stress he is under right now. Of course he is going to have a huge payoff soon it sounds like so he may be living large.

Here he was impersonating Leno earlier this week on his own show doing a Jay Leno monologue (This is part 1. Follow the related vids for the other 3 parts):

This was his appearance recently on the 10 at 10 segment of Leno's own show, and owning him:

NBC Trying to Screw Conan O'Brien

Well...I'm taking the Conan O'Brien side of this whole thing. While I don't even watch these late night shows, I always did find Conan to be funnier to me than Leno, or Letterman. Those two are like watching your grandfather look for his keys IMO.

So if I were to curl up in front of my electric fireplaces late at night, I would be wanting to watch Conan, and not Leno.

It's obvious to anyone that has any common sense that Conan O'Brien appeals more to younger audiences. It is also obvious that his getting screwed over by NBC and Leno. Why the hell is Leno back? Why the hell did he even quit the Tonight Show if NOW he is trying to get that time slot back?

It is a slap in the face to Conan in every way. Leno gave him The Tonight Show, and then for some reason decides to directly compete with him? WTF? If Conan doesn't keep the Tonight Show time slot, NBC, and Leno have screwed him, and the outcome is flat out wrong in every way. Including financially I would guess.

Communication? No...Cummunication

Ever wonder what college athletes take in school? You know basket weaving, physical education, communication so they can learn to communicate and won't have to resort to being on pop displays when they retire.

Now a new rage is sweeping college campuses for athletes. It is the elite degree called Cummunications. At least this is a program that Kansas State is offering according to Fox sports.

This Whole Tiger Woods Thing...

I have been able to regularly ignore the majority of this for now, but it just doesn't go away, and doesn't get much worse than it does today. I really don't mind listening to it when it is covered by sports reporters, or writers. It isn't that bad since he is a golfer, and we aren't subjected to ridiculous angles that these celb morons can throw out there.

Today, Vanity Fair is in the news because they posted a picture of Tiger Woods from 2006 and then makes some of the most incredible conclusions anyone can ever see. On top of that some moron from Fox News, Brit Hume goes out of his way to claim that Tiger Woods should just switch religions to Christianity so that he can be forgiven! This is the FREAKING NEWS PEOPLE! Luckily he is offending Buddhist here and probably has no need for
life insurance after such ignorant comments.

Avatar Tops Christmas Box Office in Record Box Office Weekend

No surprise here that this was the top earner for the Christmas weekend. Christmas weekend is a big movie going weekend too if you hadn't noticed before. Many of us like to take in an afternoon movie with the family after the early morning gift fiasco instead of breaking out the new treadmill and getting to work on the extra holiday fat.

This year with Christmas falling on a Friday it was expected to be a very big weekend, and it set a record. The previous best weekend was the weekend that The Dark Knight opened in July 2008. That weekend the US and Canada opened with the record of $261 Million.

This weekend surpassed that weekend with a total of $278 Million in US and Canada, and taking inflation into account it appears to still be the bigger take according to data from Hollywood.com. The Los Angeles-based firm's data go back to about 1985. It was only a year ago after all.

Led by the 3-D epic "Avatar," which was followed closely by "Sherlock Holmes" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," total estimated theatrical receipts from Friday through Sunday in the U.S. and Canada were $278 million.

"Avatar" sold $75 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada, down just 3% from its opening, in a display of unusually strong momentum. "Sherlock Holmes" started with a very healthy $65.4 million, while "Alvin" collected a solid $50.2 million over the three-day weekend.
